Gili Avissar (*1980 in Haifa, lives in Tel Aviv/ Dusseldorf) is a multi-disciplinary artist combining painting, sculpture, video and performance. Avissar studied visual arts at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem as well as at the Glasgow School of Art, UK (B.F.A and M.F.A degrees). He has received a number of grants, notably from the Artis Grant, Artport Residency grant, The Meetfactory residency, the Israel Cultural Foundation, the Kunststiftung NRW and the Goethe Institute. His works have been shown in solo and group exhibitions around the world.
During his fellowship Gili Avissar created the installation “The Fith Season in Me”. Over a period of four months, people from Schöppingen were invited to donate textile from their homes which was not used anymore. Slowly different images started to appear from those textiles. Fleeting appearances, temporary states, fluid identities – Gili’s works evade fixed meanings and genres. His textile objects work in two as well as three-dimensional space, acting both as installations and as costumes for actors.
