Marie Sturm, Künstler*dorf Schöppingen 2024

Clara Gott, born in Neuss in 2002, lives and works in Pulheim near Cologne. Clara has been drawing since her early childhood and has developed a diverse body of drawings, which she has recently begun to expand with the media of painting, collage and ceramics. The artist’s works feature a colorful palette and a style influenced by manga and anime. It is only on closer inspection that an exciting contrast to her chosen themes emerges. Her drawings often feature scenarios from hidden worlds with mysterious laboratories, medical experiments and obscure interpersonal relationships, reflecting her keen interest in abandoned places, neurology and dream research.

“I have been working for some time on a series of small and large-format collages, which I mainly make from my own drawings. During my time in Schöppingen, I wanted to condense and develop the drawings and collages into an artist’s book. I had planned to work on a specific theme for the first time, which is otherwise rather atypical for me. For some time now, the themes of loneliness and isolation have been incorporated into my work in different ways. In the artist’s book with the working title “She and the People”, I wanted to deal primarily with the tension between the longing for connection and contact and loneliness and being alone. In Schöppingen, I was also able to devote myself to my ceramic work, which also deals with this topic to a certain extent. I have been working for some time on ceramics that show surreal, abandoned cities.”
