Brief description
A place for art and culture:
The Künstlerdorf Schöppingen was founded in 1989. It is a place for art and culture. Artists who write, create visual art or compose music work here.
Overview of art forms:
Literature refers to the writing of texts, poems, or stories.
Visual art is painting, photography, and other pictorial forms.
Composition describes the invention and creation of music.
Location and buildings:
The artists‘ village is located in the Münsterland region, near the Dutch border. It is housed in two converted farms with several buildings.
Fellowships and residencies:
Each year, about 40 artists receive a fellowship. A fellowship is money to support your work. You do not have to pay it back. A group of art experts chooses who gets on. A scholarship covers a stay of 2 to 6 months. (Link to scholarship)
International community:
Up to 15 artists live and work there at the same time. The program is open to applicants from all over the world. There is no age limit.
Mission
A place of community:
The Künstlerdorf is a place where people meet, talk, work and learn together. People from different artistic disciplines meet here. They exchange ideas, develop concepts, and learn from each other. This gives rise to new ideas and opportunities for recreation. These have an impact on each individual, on the Künstlerdorf itself, and on society.
Spaces and offerings:
Our spaces are constantly changing. They are filled with ideas and working methods, tools and materials. These are closely related to the projects of the fellowship holders. Many activities are open to everyone. These include learning together and meetings with artists, concerts, and exhibitions.
Spaces in the Künstlerdorf
The Künstlerdorf comprises the following areas:
– the garden
– the communal kitchen
– the workshop
– the library
– the gallery
– the exhibition hall
– the artists‘ apartments
These spaces offer plenty of space for working, learning, and meeting together. People with different experiences and perspectives come together here. This creates places of learning, spaces of knowledges, and new encounters.
Community and collaboration:
Mutual support is very important to the Schöppingen Künstlerdorf. Knowledge is shared. Competition, i.e., mutual comparison, plays no role.
Diversity and support:
We know that artists have different living conditions. The Künstlerdorf pays attention to the needs of each and every individual. This includes, for example, family obligations and responsibilities or health restrictions. We are committed to diversity and oppose any form of exclusion.
Dealing with discrimination
We take into account various forms of disadvantage:
– Physical and mental impairment
– Social background = the circumstances in which someone grows up
– Racism = discrimination based on skin color and origin
– Anti-Semitism = rejection of Jewish people
– Sexism = Unequal treatment due to gender
We also recognize that these experiences can overlap.

This includes, for example, the so-called „Open Studio“ and Dinner.
