Gudrun Staiger and Rudi Beutinger have been working as an artist duo „verstoffwechselt“ (“metabolized”) since 1994. The term for the artistic collaboration has a programmatic character and indicates an approach that is associated with processes of transformation. It is important to them to always work from the idea to the medium. This results in a broad spectrum of very different, mostly conceptual and contextual works on the socio-cultural value system, on environmental problems such as plastic waste and climate change, as well as on current political issues.

During the fellowship in Schöppingen, “verstoffwechselt” worked on five very different pieces on the topic of “Crisis”.

“Meal!” Is a large-format 280 cm x 200 cm mosaic pixel work made from approx. 2300 plastic pixels cut from the plastic waste of the dual system. The work shows a bird that died from plastic waste.

“Triage” consists of four 25 cm x 25 cm acrylic pictures on cardboard, which thematize the problematic situation of prominent whistleblowers and at the same time bring them into connection with the pandemic.

“Organon” is a light and audio installation that critically deals with subconscious prejudices against ethnicities and people of other origins and advocates the creation of a tolerance for ambiguity.

„Zeitgeist“ is a video installation that reflects the emergence and handling of new language creations.

“Votum” is an interactive ballot box in the form of a ball or ballotage, which playfully and ironically deals with the manipulation of voting processes.
