Kai-Hendrik Windeler (*1985 in Neuss, Germany) studied energy and environmental engineering at the TU Hamburg-Harburg, photography at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts in Kiel, and fine arts at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. There he taught at the Abendakademie from 2018-21. From 2013-14, Windeler worked as a curator at Kunstraum Liska (Leipzig) and has been part of the artist collective Situation Room since 2013. He completed national and international artist-in-residence residencies (including La Nouvelle Galerie, Bergerac, France / Künstlerhaus Otte1, Eckernförde), was a fellow of the Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen (2018), the Kuturamt Leipzig (2020), and the Stiftung Kunstfonds (2021), and is represented in various collections. In his research-based works and projects, Kai-Hendrik Windeler deals with the construction and transformation of information, architecture and spatial structures. He often translates this examination into conceptual, multimedia, site-specific spatial installations in which he makes use of the formal and aesthetic properties of archiving.
During his fellowship, Kai-Hendrik Windeler worked on his long-term artistic research project „Territorial Objects“ on the territorial heritage of the GDR and the post-socialist transformation as well as the construction and constitution of land and soil. To do this, he auctions off “unusable” tiny plots of land in rural areas of East Germany from the remainder of a subsidiary of the Treuhandanstalt, declares them discursive art objects and labors with their social inscriptions.
