Evgenija Wassilew works with experimental drawing and sound, exploring various dynamics of hearing. Parallel to her audio recordings of voices, radio signals, and acoustic feedback, she explores expanded forms of handwriting, sound notation, and text-based collage. She describes her practice of drawing, recording, and listening as a way of thinking and as a translation of the embodied experience of fluctuating information, empathy, and disturbance. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions, performance festivals, and artist residencies, including the Marrakech Biennale (2014), Braunschweig Projects (2016), Berlinische Galerie (2018), Museum Ulm (2019), Seanaps Festival, Leipzig (2020), Galeria Promocyjna, Warsaw (2023), and Kunstpreis Haus am Kleistpark, Berlin (2024).

“During my stay, I learned a lot about the historical and current use of Schöppinger Berg as a radar and radio site. Thanks to the openness of the local amateur radio club Contest Gruppe Schöppinger Berg e.V. (CGSB), I had the opportunity to visit their self-built antennas and observe how nature is taking over the technology, interweaving time and space, past and present. In addition to my daily studio work—in which I transcribed sounds and noises onto paper with ink, monotype, and hand drawing—I experimented with various sounds in situ on the mountain: I tuned my portable feedback instruments to dismantled, lying antennas, played sine waves to them, was able to receive traces of radio signals, and installed and documented other sounds on site. At the end of my stay, I had the opportunity to use the CGSB’s antennas to broadcast passages from books as poetic interference in the amateur radio spectrum. Participating in the Open Studios was also an opportunity to discuss ongoing research and questions with fellows and visitors—how can receiving, listening, and understanding remain possible in turbulent times?”
