In addition, from 12-4 p.m., the vernissage of the artist Chebo Roitter Pavez  entitled “Nocturnal Creatures from Schöppingen” will take place in the gallery. The exhibition can be viewed by appointment until October 29th, 2022. On October 29th, 2022, the drawings can be bought at an auction.

Nighttime is, naturally, the preferred setting for animals that live and compete with humans, because they are not disturbed and can lead their lives regardless of the city’s presence. The night is also the context of dreams, fears, and the unknown, where the small can be big, noises have no clear origin, and where humans first started to imagine animals, depicting them in cave paintings and bringing them to life through storytelling and fire, in a form of proto-cinema. The fascination for animals and their unique traits contrast with the practical approach to them, as their not always engaged with the same admiration and bewildering that can be found in their representation, furthermore, this contemplative gaze was occupied by mechanistic anatomy, a more utilitarian, empiric and scientific approach. In between these two ways of representation, we find naturalism, the curiosities cabinets, and experiments like Kunst-Formen der Natur.

Following the model of Historia Naturalis van Rudolf II, by Anselmus Boëtius de Boodt, Chebo Roitter Pavez  (1988, Buenos Aires, Argentina) documents the local fauna of nocturnal animals of the Münsterland in a series of drawings that invite everybody to tell new stories and create new legends.
