Ona Juciūtė (*1988, in Vilnius, Lithuania) holds a MA for Contemporary Sculpture from the Vilnius Academy of Arts and a BA in Political Science from the Vilnius University and has been an artist in residence at Rupert, Vilnius and AIR Niederösterreich in Krems, Austria. She has exhibited at the Contemporary Art Centre, Editorial project space, Swallow project space, Atletika Gallery and other spaces in Vilnius and the MOCAK museum in Krakow. Juciūtė was awarded the JCDecaux Prize and received a personal grant from the legendary US/LT artist Aleksandra Kasuba. In 2021 her works were acquired as part of the collection of Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki.
Ona Juciūtė raises questions about how things are made today with her sculptures and installations. Production is a crucial element of her practice – she often finds herself engaging in peculiar scenarios of making, such as learning how to cast fake amber with a professional amber counterfeiter or commissioning a baker to make human ears from dough. Her artworks speak of the relationship between the individual and the found world, established through objects and commodities, and recent projects have explored hierarchy, history and the future of different materials. During her residency she worked on a collaborative project together with Nolwenn Salaün which culminated in an intervention at the museum’s barn of the local Heritage Association.
This project is part of the i-Portunus Houses pilot scheme which is implemented, on behalf of the European Commission.
