During his fellowship in the Künstlerdorf, Steve Brown worked on the series “Traces” with photographic works from Schöppingen and the surrounding area. The subjects are timeless shots of rural scenes and characteristic elements of Schöppingen’s history, which use a symbolic imagery and conjure up thoughts of the past and the originality of the surroundings. Steve works analogue and used the old cyanotopic printing process for an even stronger localization of the temporal perception in the past. Some works were presented as tapestries and, with this reference to centuries-old craftsmanship, embody another bridge to the past. The combination of subjects and techniques creates a basic mood characterized by symbolism, which fades out the modern and directs one’s gaze to the past. Steve creates a kind of new iconography of landmarks, animals and natural elements, which make the essence or aura of the place visible by means of transience and originality.
